As a motorcycle adventurer, Lacy Betton has completed three charity rides from Key West, Florida, to the Arctic Ocean. On March 15, 2014, he will depart from Miami on a three-year, 170,000-mile, solo motorcycle trip around the world.

Lacy was born on his grandfather’s farm in Cotton Plant, Arkansas, and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He holds a degree from Chicago State University. After entering the Navy at 18 as a seaman recruit, Lacy managed to ascend the ranks within 10 years to become Commanding Officer of the Armed Forces Readiness Center at Stockton, California. In 2004, he retired as Commander U.S. Navy and will complete an additional 10 years in civilian government service with the U.S. Southern Command’s Current Operations Directorate in December 2013.

His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Metal, Meritorious Service Metal, Joint Meritorious Service Metal, Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal.

Lacy spends his free time raising money for various charities including the American Red Cross, the Miami Rescue Mission and The Breast Cancer Association. He is an avid horseman and a natural hoof care specialist who donates his time at the Rescue Horse Mission of NSPCA. Lacy has two adult children: Andrea, 26, a marketing specialist in Norfolk, Virginia, and Lacy III, 22, a musician and chef in San Diego, California.
